Over 800 hundred New Yorkers gathered for a private evening at the Museum of Modern Art on Monday, April 27, 2015 to celebrate the work of Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York (CCC). CCC is New York City’s premier multi-issue, non-profit and non-partisan child advocacy organization, founded 71 years ago. The cocktail party was an opportunity to recognize the longtime support of Chris Stern Hyman and Brad S. Karp, as well to celebrate CCC’s independent research, education and advocacy to improve the lives of the nearly 2 million children living in New York City.
Chris Stern Hyman has served as both President and Chairman of CCC and is currently Secretary of our Board. She is a health care lawyer and a mediator who also serves on the Boards of Women in Need and the Fund for Public Health. Ms. Stern Hyman was recognized for her unwavering commitment to CCC’s work and for her continuation of a remarkable family legacy, representing a third generation of the Rosenwald family who have led CCC through key moments in the organization’s history since it was co-founded by Chris’s great-aunt Adele Rosenwald Levy and Eleanor Roosevelt in 1944. In fact, Adele Rosenwald Levy was also responsible for MoMA’s acquisition of its iconic Jacob Lawrence works in 1942, after her father, Julius Rosenwald, who built Sears & Roebuck into America’s biggest mail-order business, provided Lawrence with foundation support during the creation of the Migration series in the early 1940s.
Brad Karp has been Chair of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison since 2008. He has been profiled by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Financial Times, among others, as one of the country’s leading lawyers and corporate advisers. In 2014, Crain's named Brad one of the Most Influential New Yorkers; in 2013, the New York Law Journal awarded Brad its first-ever Impact Award, in recognition of his "significant and lasting impact on the legal community in New York." He and Paul Weiss, have been steadfast supporters of CCC for over a decade. Mr. Karp was honored not only for that support, but for his personal leadership and guidance of many organizations and non-profits that promote social justice, ethics, and the enrichment of his profession and the community.
The celebration began at 7 pm with a VIP reception and private viewing of the 2015 Museum of Modern Art exhibition One-Way Ticket: Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series and Other Works. From 7:30 to 9:30 pm, guests gathered in the Agnes Gund Garden Lobby for a cocktail reception and viewing of the contemporary exhibit, Björk: A Retrospective.
Attendees included Honorary Director and former CCC Chairman Samuel P. Peabody and his daughter Elizabeth Peabody as well as Honorary Art Chair Alexandra A. Herzan. CCC Executive Director Jennifer March, Chairman Jessica Aaron and President Diana Elghanayan were also in attendance. Event Co-Chairs included Diana and Frederick Elghanayan, Judith A. Garson and Steven N. Rappaport, Ricki Tigert Helfer and Michael Helfer, Nancy and Alan N. Locker, Lizz v. and Tyrone D. Smith, Sara and David Stone, and Susan Wasserstein and George Sard.
